"I managed to arrange for a tow truck driver, using my husband’s cell phone, which came with a free service called “Mr. Rescue.” Mr. Rescue doesn’t know the first thing about Oregon. Mr. Rescue is based in Florida. The dispatcher wanted to know what town I was near. All I could tell her was that I remembered seeing a sign that said Eugene 38 miles, and thinking, good, in just 38 miles I can pee." —excerpt From April Henry's comedy, Panties in a Twist

SPREADING MY WINGS

Learning to Fly Already in Second Printing
I was told May 6 that my new thriller, Learning to Fly, is already in its second printing - even though its official release date is May 13. In addition to starred reviews in Library Journal and Booklist, it's been singled out by Amazon as a "Penzler Pick" and got reviews in the May 5 editions of the Denver Post and San Francisco Chronicle. Please let me know if you see a review anyplace else.

I understand a producer is trying to get an actress on board with the hopes of getting the movie backed. We shall see.

I just returned from Malice Domestic, a mystery fan conference in Washington DC. I picked up some great books there, including Deborah Donnely's Veiled Threats and Charlaine Harris's Dead Until Dark. I had to kneel on my carry-on luggage to make everything fit.

After that, I went to New York to do signings at three bookstores. In just 40 hours, I managed to go to the bookstores, eat great meals, visit two museums, get lost in Central Park, see my agent for the first time in seven years, spend a somber moment contemplating the vastness of Ground Zero, have lunch with my editor (who is 82!), and experience the joys of Krispy Kreme donuts (they really ARE heavenly). Oh, and walk past Woody Allen and his young bride/adopted daughter. I tried to maintain a blase, New York expression.

The Claire Montrose Series
Buried Diamonds, the fourth in the Claire Montrose series, is done and will be out next May. In the book, Claire finds an engagement ring, missing for 50 years. The woman who owned the ring committed suicide - or did she?

The Japanese have finally finished translating Circles
of Confusion. A copy has been shipped to me (on an
actual ship) and I should get it in a few weeks. I
really want to see what they did with the license
plates.
