ircles has been nominated for the Oregon Book Award and the Spotted Owl Mystery Award.
Right now, Drew Barrymore is considering optioning it. While Drew is not exactly who comes to mind first thing (seeing as how Claire is 35, five-ten, thin and a redhead), the producer told me that “Drew's emotional baggage makes her older than her physical years.” The odds of anything becoming a movie are always slim, but it's fun to think about. Circles is currently under consideration by publishers in Japan and England (although it would be more interesting to see it translated in Japanese).
In December, 1999, Circles will come out in paperback. My agent is currently negotiating with Warner Bros. for the right for one character to sing Layla to himself in the shower. For the hardback, I had to pay $300, so goodness knows what it will cost to have some of the lyrics appear in five times as many paperbacks. (Memo to self: never have character sing again.)
